How does Georgia tax a car lease?

Verified. This guide reflects the primary source below, last reviewed 2026-08-15.

Tax on the total of payments, up front. Georgia does not charge ordinary sales tax on a lease. Instead it charges the one-time Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT), and for a lease the TAVT base is the total of the base lease payments plus any down payment, rather than the vehicle's full value. TAVT is due when the vehicle is titled and is usually capitalized into the lease, so you finance it across the term.

What Georgia's tax method means for your payment

Tax on every payment is calculated at signing. Paying it in cash at delivery is normally cheaper than capitalizing it, because a capitalized tax bill earns rent charge for the full term.

Before you sign in Georgia, get three numbers in writing: the capitalized cost, the money factor, and the residual value. Tax method decides when you pay, but those three decide how much the lease actually costs. Run them through the calculator below with your combined Georgia rate to see the payment the dealer should be quoting.

How the lease is taxed

Doc & registration norms

Georgia does not cap dealer documentary fees. Because TAVT is calculated from the payment total, a dealer that inflates the payment also inflates your tax — check that the TAVT figure on the worksheet reconciles with the payments listed.

Early termination

Early termination follows the Regulation M disclosure. TAVT is a one-time title tax and is generally not prorated or refunded if you end the lease early.
