Car-lease glossary

What is a disposition fee on a lease?

The disposition fee covers the leasing company's cost to clean, inspect, and resell the car after you return it. It's commonly $300–$500 (not a guaranteed amount — check the exact figure in your own contract) and is disclosed up front, but often overlooked until lease end.

Why it matters

Common and usually non-negotiable once in the contract, but you should know it's coming.

What dealers don't tell you

  • A disposition fee above ~$500.
  • Being charged it even if you lease or buy another car from the same brand (some waive it).

How to negotiate it

  • Ask whether the fee is waived if you lease or buy another vehicle from them.
  • Try to have it removed or reduced when you first sign.

Worked example

"Lessee shall pay a disposition fee of $395 upon return of the vehicle unless Lessee purchases the vehicle."
